Position Summary

The Senior Pastor provides spiritual leadership, biblical preaching and teaching, pastoral care, and overall shepherding for the congregation of First Reformed Church. The pastor leads the church in worship, discipleship, outreach, and congregational life, working in partnership with the consistory to help the church faithfully live out its mission in Christ.

The Senior Pastor’s regular responsibilities include weekly preaching, worship leadership, pastoral visitation, funerals, baptisms, weddings, counseling, discipleship, and community engagement.

Working Relationships

Accountable to: Consistory/Leadership Board Provides oversight to: Ministry staff, volunteers, and ministry leaders as appropriate

Primary Responsibilities

These responsibilities should represent approximately 80 percent of the pastor’s time and energy.

1. Preaching and Teaching Prepare and deliver biblically faithful, Christ-centered sermons and Scripture-based teaching that nurtures faith, strengthens discipleship, and equips the congregation for Christian living.

2. Spiritual Leadership Provide steady, prayerful, and compassionate leadership to the congregation, guiding the church in faithfulness to God, unity in Christ, and dependence on the Holy Spirit.

3. Worship Leadership Help plan and lead worship services that honor God, proclaim the gospel, and encourage heartfelt participation from the congregation.

4. Discipleship Encourage spiritual growth among members of all ages by supporting Bible studies, small groups, prayer, mentoring, and other discipleship opportunities within the church.

5. Community Engagement and Outreach Be present and engaged in the Willmar community, helping the church build relationships, share the gospel, and identify opportunities for mission, service, and growth.

Secondary Responsibilities

These responsibilities are more occasional in nature and should represent approximately 20 percent or less of the pastor’s time and energy.

1. Pastoral Care and Visitation Visit and care for members who are sick, hospitalized, homebound, grieving, or in care facilities, offering prayer, encouragement, and spiritual support.

2. Senior Adult Ministry Provide pastoral care and encouragement to senior adults in the congregation, including visits and support as needed.

3. Evangelism Encourage the congregation to share the good news of Jesus Christ, proclaiming forgiveness, new life, and eternal hope through him.

4. Small Group Ministry Develop, support, and when appropriate lead Bible studies or small groups that deepen faith and strengthen relationships within the church.

5. Family Care and Support Encourage and support families in the life of the church through pastoral care, counseling, prayer, and connection to the broader church community.
